‘The war in Ukraine – Why is peace so elusive?” speaker topic at AAUW event, public invited

The public is invited to the program held by Del Mar-Leucadia Branch of American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to noon at Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive, Encinitas. The speaker, Dr. Branislav Slantchev, UCSD political science professor, will discuss problems that prevent reaching a ceasefire, domestic circumstances in Ukraine and Russia, and international politics with a focus on the U.S. and Europe.

Slantchev’s research, supported by the National Science Foundation, includes military coercion, intra-war negotiations, the conduct of war, and war terminations. His articles appear in the American Political Science Review, the American Journal of Political Science, International Studies Quarterly, and Security Studies, among others. His book, Military Threats: The Costs of Coercion and the Price of Peace, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2011. Slantchev teaches courses in international relations, national security, and game theory, a news release stated.

In the first half hour there will be time to socialize, network, and enjoy refreshments.AAUW is a national organization that advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. This AAUW branch provides scholarships for local college students and for local middle school girls who are chosen to attend AAUW’s Tech Trek, a STEM camp for girls.
