1 dead after shooting in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter

by Blake Nelson

One person was shot and killed Sunday evening in downtown San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Officials said a suspect had been arrested.

The shooting occurred around 5:20 p.m. in a bar on the third floor of a building on the corner of G Street and Sixth Avenue, San Diego Police Lt. Lou Maggi said during a downtown press conference.

The structure holds several businesses, including the Cielo Rooftop Lounge and the Cowboy Cantina, and it wasn’t immediately clear which bar was involved.

Maggi said the suspect had already been detained outside by other people in the area when officers arrived. The group identified Bryan Tyner, a 37-year-old from San Diego, as the shooter and showed officers the man’s handgun, according to a department press release.

Tyner will be jailed on suspicion of murder, officials said.

Maggi added that the shooting appeared to have stemmed from some sort of altercation and he did not suspect gang activity. “We don’t have any reason to believe there’s any further threat.”

The victim was a 46-year-old Black man, police said. His name was not immediately released. He was found on the ground in a third-floor hallway with at least one gunshot wound, according to the press release. Paramedics and officers were unable to revive him.

Amid an otherwise boisterous Gaslamp, most of the businesses by 701 Sixth Avenue looked empty as of Sunday evening. Much of Sixth Avenue between G and F streets had been roped off with caution tape, and several police SUVs were also parked on Fifth Avenue.

Maggi said officers had access to surveillance video from inside the building and that the investigation would likely continue through the night. Investigators could be seen interviewing people in the middle of the closed road as the sun set.

Officials asked anyone with information about the incident to call the police department’s homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
