Ask the Coach: Aztecs coach Sean Lewis welcomes fan questions
San Diego State football fans who are wondering “Why the heck did they do that?” — hello all you arm-chair quarterbacks out there — have an opportunity to get some answers this season.
Maybe you’re interested to know about a particular play, find out what goes on in prepping for an opponent, which wide receiver has been most impressive in practice, or what is the head coach’s go-to Mexican food restaurant.
Whatever. You ask, SDSU coach Sean Lewis will answer.
The Union-Tribune will collect questions from fans and pose the best ones to Lewis each week this season, collecting queries this weekend as the Aztecs point toward Thursday’s season opener against Stony Brook at Snapdragon Stadium.
“I would love for them to ask about things that they’re most interested in,” Lewis said. “If we expand it outside of just Xs and Os, I’m sure they’re going to second guess or praise all the great calls that we make or don’t make, but there’s so much more that goes on behind the scenes.”
Lewis began his coaching career in 2010 as tight ends coach at the University of Omaha-Nebraska. He made six other stops before being hired at SDSU following the 2023 season.
“I’ve been doing this for what is now a long time,” Lewis said. “I still have friends and family that in the ‘offseason’ ask me what I do and still think we just roll the balls out come fall. There’s a lot more that goes on.”
“Wherever they want to take it, from favorite food spots to favorite beverages to favorite movies to the Xs and Os, I’d be happy to shed light on the program and the individuals within the program that make this place so special.”
Questions will be collected each weekend and into Monday and then presented to Lewis.
Questions can be emailed to kirk.kenney@sduniontribune.com or directed to @sdutkirKDKenney on X (formerly Twitter).
The Union-Tribune will run responses in midweek.
It all looks so easy. Run, pass, catch. Block and tackle. Turns out there’s a little more to it.
“We’re not playing Battleship offense here,” Lewis said. “We’re not looking at the call sheet, going A3, was that a hit? There’s some very real strategy and some very real time on task … There’s more to it than what the fans see on game day.”
Let the questions begin.
