Autopsy reveals woman died from an overdose in Los Colinas jail
A 31-year-old woman who died in a Santee jail cell a day after her arrest had a fatal amount of methamphetamine and fentanyl in her system, according to an autopsy report released by the county Medical Examiner’s Office.
Callen Lines of La Mesa was found inside her cell at Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility while jail staff were making routine checks on May 12 around 7:25 p.m., sheriff’s Lt. Juan Marquez.
Staff called 911 and began performing life-saving measures, including administering Narcan, a nasal spray used to reverse overdose symptoms, as well as chest compressions and a defibrillator, the autopsy reads.
She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:15 p.m., Marquez said.
Lines’ intake screening showed she had unknown levels of methamphetamine, fentanyl and additional narcotics in her urinalysis, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.
The medical examiner’s report notes that she was treated throughout her time at the jail for possible withdrawal symptoms. On the day of her death, she had made statements of not feeling well and that she might pass out, according to the autopsy report.
Lines had been booked on multiple allegations, including suspicion of vehicle theft and resisting an officer.
The Sheriff’s Office said the jail death is being investigated by its homicide division, as are all in-custody deaths. It is also being reviewed by the Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board, the county’s civilian oversight body.
