Aztecs make a point to recognize the military, especially on Veterans Day
Sean Lewis has embraced San Diego as a military city from virtually the moment he was hired as San Diego State’s football coach.
Military themes have been incorporated into offseason workouts, daily routines and team events.
The observation Tuesday of Veterans Day, honoring military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, provides another occasion for Lewis to talk to the team about sacrifice and recognize those who have served.
“What we get to do is because there’s unbelievable men and women serving or have served to defend our freedoms and allow us to obsess on this silly game,” said Lewis, wearing a camo-themed cap at Monday’s press conference. “There are people doing much greater things and are willing to put their lives on the line for this beautiful country.
“We’re really, really apreciative of all that they do. We have some things in the works to be able to take care of some veterans, and people in the community who have supported veterans in a big-time way, to give them some free tickets to the game this weekend.
“I’d be remiss if I didn’t say thanks to our vets and all that they do to all us to do what we do without having to think about or worry about the evils that are out there.”
SDSU players visited a military base during the offseason and experienced a day of SEAL training. Speakers with military backgrounds also have been brought in to talk to the team.
“I feel like our offseason was centered around people that put their lives on the line for us,” SDSU edge Trey White said. “It’s a huge thanks to them. Shout-out to them. We appreciate their service, for sure. … We kind of have the military mindset. We can’t leave our brothers. We can’t let our brothers down. I feel like we take a lot of things from them, so we appreciate them.”
Added SDSU running back Lucky Sutton: “My dad retired from the Navy, so I’m from a military family. All the veterans, we all play for them, play for everybody.
“Just salute to all the veterans, all the military that are out there. If any veterans are coming to the game, we’d be really appreciative. We’re going to try to put out a (good) game for all of them.”
