Bicyclist, 70, seriously injured in Midway District collision

A 70-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle on a roadway in the Midway District and suffered serious injuries, authorities said.

San Diego police officers responded to the 4100 block of Sports Arena Boulevard at about 2:45 p.m. Oct. 3 regarding reports of a traffic collision involving a bicyclist, according to the Police Department.

The bicyclist was struck by a 1992 Mazda pickup truck driven by a 29-year-old man traveling north in the adjacent lane. The bicyclist turned left from the bike lane into the path of the vehicle, police said.

The cyclist suffered fractured ribs, a broken tibia, a fractured fibula and a collapsed lung and was taken to a hospital. He was expected to survive, authorities said.
