Bicyclist dies after being cut off by a child on a scooter, Oceanside police say
A 72-year-old man died Sunday after his bicycle was cut off by a child on a scooter, Oceanside police said.
The man had been riding along the San Luis Rey River Trail in Oceanside when he came upon the 7-year-old around 10:40 a.m. near Mance Buchanon Park and attempted to pass, Officer Gina Avalos said.
But the child then “unintentionally veered into the cyclist’s path, causing him to fall,” Avalos wrote in a text message.
Although the man was wearing a helmet, he hurt his head in the crash, police said. First responders used CPR, but the man died before he could be airlifted to a hospital, police said.
The man’s name is to be released after his family has been notified.
The man and child did not collide, and nobody else appears to have been injured, according to police.
