Bishop’s to play for SoCal crown in boys water polo; La Jolla loses rematch with Cathedral

by La Jolla Light

La Jolla boys water polo teams had a chance for two firsts in their CIF Southern California Regional semifinal playoff games Nov. 20.

La Jolla High could become the first San Diego Section team to make it to the Division I regional final in the tournament’s eight-year history.

The Bishop’s School, playing in Division II, could advance to its first SoCal final.

The honors in this case go to Bishop’s, as the top-seeded Knights defeated No. 4 seed Carlsbad 19-6 to move on to the division championship game vs. No. 2 Santana at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

The La Jolla Vikings were unable to repeat their last-minute 13-12 victory over Cathedral Catholic in the San Diego Section Open Division championship five days earlier and lost to the Dons in the teams’ Division I regional rematch 10-9.

The second-seeded Vikings came back from a five-goal deficit to close within one at 8-7 midway through the fourth quarter at La Jolla’s Coggan Family Aquatic Complex.

But third seed Cathedral opened the lead to three and then withstood two last-minute goals by the Vikings to close out the victory.

Dexter Black scored four goals to lead La Jolla, and Tor Martin and Henry Glenister each recorded two goals.

Cathedral next will face No. 1 Newport Harbor in the Division I championship game Nov. 22 at Mount SAC.
