Boy inside Encinitas gelato shop injured when pickup crashes into building

by Kristina Davis

A suspected DUI driver slammed into an Encinitas gelato shop Wednesday evening, injuring a boy inside the business, sheriff’s officials said.

The crash happened about 6 p.m. at the intersection of South Coast Highway 101 and D Street. Investigators said a 2026 Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended a 2022 Toyota Prius as the vehicles traveled northbound on Coast Highway. The pickup then veered off the road and crashed into Gelato 101, sheriff’s Sgt. Kristy Trampus said.

A boy who was inside the building was struck and trapped beneath the truck, Trampus said. First responders freed the child, who was conscious and breathing, and he was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not released, nor was his age.

The driver of the Silverado, a 64-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, Trampus said. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The Prius driver was not injured.
