Campillo right about City Hall needing to be more transparent

by U T Readers

Re “The bullies come for Campillo” (Dec. 21): I applaud Councilman Raul Campillo for seeking transparency when it comes to tax increases. The city needs to do a better job at managing its real estate assets. I was dismayed to read the city had allowed its Mission Bay leases to lapse and revert to month-to-month tenancies. Performance audits of those leases have not been done annually, resulting in lost revenue. Performance-based leases typically have rents set below market to account for the revenue share the leases require if audited. If the revenue from those properties had been received, the city may not have had to charge for parking at Balboa Park. 101 Ash is not the only bad real estate deal. There is also another funding source for infrastructure improvements that could be used instead of asking voters to increase sales taxes, yet it appears this is the avenue of choice.  We need better leaders like Campillo.
