Canyon Crest’s tennis dynasty continues with another Open Division title
Canyon Crest Academy has become one of the top girls’ tennis programs in San Diego County. Dating back to 2018, the Ravens have made seven consecutive CIF San Diego Section Open Division championship appearances.
And on Friday night, in a rematch of the 2024 Open Division championship game, Canyon Crestcruised to an 11-7 victory over Del Norte, securing the program’s fourth Open Division title in the last five seasons.
“This is a resilient group,” said Canyon Crest coach Kevin Brown, “We’ve played some of the top teams in the country, and they’ll play anybody. There is no fear, and really no kind of nerves. The sustaining of the success just comes down to how steady the players that they are.”
Canyon Crest gained control in singles thanks to the efforts of Alyssa Liu and Annabelle Halabo. The Ravens’ No.1 and No.2 singles combined to go 5-1 on the night.
Liu swept her singles sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, while Halabo won two of her three sets.
Both Liu and Halabo are slated as top seeds in the upcoming CIF Open Division singles tournament bracket.
“In my matches, I realized all three of my opponents are struggling with low balls. So I sliced more than I usually do. I felt like that worked really well today,” said Liu, “I feel like my straight lies with my consistency. My coach just always tells me to make more balls than my opponent.”
The doubles team of Ahana Singh and Kaelyn Liu provided key points for Canyon Crest to secure the match, winning two of its three matches, 6-4, 6-4. The only match of the evening they would drop is to Del Norte’s top doubles pairing of Sam and San Harpster.
“Ahana has just gotten better, better, and better. She expects to win,” said Brown, “Her and Kaelyn were down a break 1-2 over there, and there was no panic. What they do is invaluable to the team, simply because they are expected to win and they do.”
The win over Del Norte not only brought home another CIF title for Canyon Crest, but also secured an undefeated 2025 season for the Ravens.
“They’re resilient,” Brown said. “We’ve been down a couple times this year, but they just always keep comingback. They get in your face and stay there.”
