Clear skies, pleasant ocean temperatures in forecast for Labor Day weekend in San Diego

Don’t forget the sunscreen if you’re heading outdoors this Labor Day weekend.

Clear skies and slightly warmer-than-average temperatures are expected over the holiday weekend across San Diego County, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures on Sunday are expected to range from the mid-70s to the lower 80s near the coast, according to the weather service. The water temperature at the beach is forecast to be between 70 and 74 degrees.

Friday morning’s cloudless skies offered no evidence of the rain that fell Thursday as Tropical Storm Juliette moved through the region. Those clear skies and increasing temperatures will continue throughout the weekend, with temperatures expected to be about five degrees above average for this time of year, forecast meteorologist Lauren Villafane said Friday.

“It will be nice and pretty out there,” Villafane said.

She said a long-period south swell will send elevated surf to the beaches between Saturday and Monday. “If you’re headed to the beach, make sure to … talk to the lifeguards about the rip currents,” Villafane said.

Waves through Monday are expected to be in the 3-to-5-foot range, with occasional 6-foot sets, before becoming more tame Tuesday, according to the weather service.

Villafane said monsoonal moisture could return to the region around Tuesday, but any potential rain or thunderstorms are expected to stay over the mountains and deserts.
