Coastal Communities Concert Band presents Summer Pops Concert

The Coastal Communities Concert Band (CCCBand), an award-winning symphonic band of more than 75 musicians from throughout San Diego County, will present its Summer Pops Concert on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St. in Carlsbad. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students are admitted free. Tickets are available at the door, online at www.cccband.com or by calling 858-761-8421.

The concert features an exciting program of music from Broadway and the movies, including selections from Wicked, How to Train Your Dragon, Cowboys and West Side Story. Band member Fred McDowell will play the beautiful A Trumpeter’s Lullaby and vocalist Michael Ruhl will perform two popular tunes. The band will round out the program with some blues, marches and big band favorites.

The podium will be shared by newly named conductor Dr. Mitchell Fennell and newly named associate conductor Dr. Bruce Mansfield. Fennel, who will officially debut at the band’s October concert, is retired as director of bands and coordinator of wind studies at Cal State Fullerton. He received a bachelor of music degree from Long Beach State University, and master of music and doctor of arts degrees from the University of Northern Colorado.  Fennell succeeds long-time conductor Tom Cole who recently retired after leading the band for 10 years.

Mansfield is an associate professor of music and director of bands at Point Loma Nazarene University, having joined the PLNU faculty after a 22-year career with the U.S. Navy music program. He holds bachelor and master of music degrees in Trombone Performance from Duquesne University, as well as a master of music and doctor of musical arts in conducting from Arizona State University.
