The nonprofit Community Resource Center in Encinitas announced that it will be hosting a food drive Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. following the increased demand due to the ongoing government shutdown.

“Many of our neighbors are being impacted by funding delays, leaving no money for groceries and more people turning to CRC for help,” John Van Cleef, CEO of the Community Resource Center, said in a statement. “We’re so grateful for the generosity of our community. Your giving helps provide food to our neighbors who are experiencing food insecurity, especially because of cuts to SNAP and the shutdown. You are the miracle that nourishes our neighbors.”

According to a CRC news release, the most needed items include canned chicken and meats, canned pastas, pasta sauce, canned beans, canned fruits and veggies, dried fruit and nuts, healthy snacks, milk alternatives, condensed/evaporated milk, oil 24 oz, ground coffee, fresh produce, and bagged salads.

On Nov. 6, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement that Californians were starting to see their SNAP benefits restored to their EBT cards, following lawsuits filed by California and other states against the Trump administration.

“As President Trump continues to create harm through self-inflicted wounds on our country, we will keep protecting Americans who are caught in the crossfire,” Newsom said. “I am pleased at the court ruling and that those food benefits are now beginning to flow back to California families.”

The food drive will take place at the Community Resource Center, 650 2nd St. in Encinitas.
