Community groups bring the U.S. Constitution learning to life at PHR Library

On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Asian American Parent Alliance of San Diego (AAPASD) and San Diego Asian Americans for Equality (SDAAFE) hosted their first-ever U.S. Constitution Contest at the PHR Library, offering students and families an engaging introduction to America’s founding document The event drew over 50 participants from the local community, with more than 30 students entering the contest, according to a news release.

The U.S. Constitution forms the foundation of American democracy, defining the separation of powers and protecting fundamental freedoms and human rights. By transforming this essential subject into a lively, interactive competition, the event helped participants explore constitutional principles in an accessible and meaningful way, the news release stated.

The contest was emceed by Frank Xu, president of the Californians for Equal Rights Foundation and co-founder of San Diego Asian Americans for Equality, whose energetic style brought complex ideas to life. Xu also invited audience members to join in real time quiz questions, providing clear explanations and real-world examples that sparked thoughtful discussion throughout the room.

“Our goal is to help students see that the Constitution is not just history, but something that shapes their everyday lives,” said Xu in the news release.

The free competition was open to K–12 students, who were grouped by grade level. Seating and materials were carefully organized to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, as students worked with focus and enthusiasm to complete each round.

As a first-time event, organizers emphasized the theme of “learning while having fun.” Students were thrilled to receive certificates and cash prizes, and the two organizations jointly sponsored $1,000 in student prizes and event expenses, reinforcing their shared commitment to civic education and youth engagement. Parents and community members praised the program for making civic education approachable and enjoyable, and expressed their wish to see more similar events in the future, the news release stated.

The event’s success reflected the dedication of volunteers and the strong support of the local community. More than a competition, the event fostered civic awareness, encouraged youth engagement with the Constitution, and strengthened community connections through shared learning, according to the news release.
