Council’s decision on Surf Cup clears way for misuse of land

Re “San Diego council relaxes limits on Surf Cup park use, over nearby homeowners’ objections” (Oct. 28): I was at this meeting. I had one minute to speak to the council. I live just north of the polo field and I have been involved in the preservation of the San Dieguito River Park since the late 1980s. Imagine how I feel watching Surf Cup, which began using the field for soccer, morph into unconfined commercial misuse of this land! Council President Joe LaCava simply gave a hand-slap to Surf Cup for violating the deed restrictions, granting it the right to continue with commercial use. LaCava acknowledged that either way the council decided there would be a lawsuit. Better to not ruffle the feathers of the side with deep pockets. When LaCava put up a complete PowerPoint of the benefits of siding with Surf Cup, there were loud comments as it became clear this was all created ahead of time!
