Del Mar City Council to consider contract for Jimmy Durante Boulevard bluff stabilization
The Del Mar City Council will vote Nov. 17 on awarding a $772,192 contract to New Century Construction for the Jimmy Durante Boulevard Bluff Stabilization Project.
New Century submitted the lowest bid out of nine firms that responded to the city.
The council will also consider awarding a $81,960 Task Order to Ardurra for construction management and inspection services, a $30,700 task order amendment to Michael Baker International for construction support services, and a $32,964 task order to NOVA Services for geotechnical services and laboratory testing.
The contract approval would follow up on a temporary restraining structure that was installed after an April 2019 bluff failure between Jimmy Durante Boulevard and 1970 Seaview Avenue, resulting in “earthen debris covering the eastern sidewalk and roadway,” according to the city.
“After the temporary retaining structure was complete, Jimmy Durante Boulevard reopened on May 29, 2019,” according to a council agenda report. “Since then, the private property located just above the failure at 1970 Seaview Avenue has been redeveloped and regraded, incorporating a series of retaining walls and landscaping that resulted in less earthen loading on the City property below.”
In 2023, Michael Baker International did survey mapping of topographic conditions and NOVA did a geotechnical stability analysis, according to the agenda report.
“Results determined that the existing retaining structure provides adequate stability factors of safety for the City property west of 1974 and 1970 Seaview Avenue and should be extended 45 feet to the south to proactively provide an adequate stability factor for the City property west of 1956 Seaview Avenue,” the report said.
