Del Mar Garden Club to hold expert-led tree walk, public invited

by News Release

The Del Mar Garden Club recently announced that it will be holding another tree walk for the community. Meet outside the Del Mar Civic Center at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, and attendees will be guided by Del Mar Garden Club’s talented Dr. Michael Simpson.

Simpson is a professor emeritus at San Diego State University, where he manages the SDSU Herbarium and continues doing research in plant evolution and classification. He is author of the textbook Plant Systematics and co-teaches the course Field Botany of San Diego County in the spring, according to a news release.

Simpson will discuss several of the trees and shrubs that occur in the city along Camino Del Mar and adjacent streets. Plan to learn about some of the cultivated plants from around the world, like the Dragon Tree, African Tulip Tree, Pōhutukawa, and several palms, plus some California natives such as the Monterey Cypress and the rarest pine tree in the world, the local Torrey Pine. There is no need to register; just show up at 10 a.m.
