Del Mar History: Then and Now: A tale of two houses
Many communities choose a historic building to become the repository of the city’s historical treasures. The building and the contents are coordinated to teach the history of the community.
In San Diego County, only Del Mar lacks a central museum or learning center about its history. Often an older home is given to the city as a place of local history, a place to remember our collective past. The Alvarado House and Edelweiss House are likely the oldest homes in Del Mar, both constructed on 10th Street by Jacob Taylor in the 1880s.
The Alvarado House is on the fairgrounds, and the Edelweiss House is in its original location, occupied by long-term owners. There may be other candidates.
The Del Mar Historical Society is seeking to create a museum that serves as a learning center to celebrate our community. The Del Mar Historical Society needs a place to teach future generations about the origins of Del Mar, a place to celebrate our founders, our artists, and our scientists. Del Mar is a unique community. Our past foretells our future. Is it time to create the Del Mar Heritage Center?
