Destroyer USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee returns to San Diego after long deployment
The guided-missile destroyer USS Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee returned Friday to Naval Base San Diego after a nine-month deployment that included time serving as an escort ship for the USS Nimitz as the carrier patrolled the Indo-Pacific on the final mission of its 50-year career.
The Higbee left San Diego Bay in late March. It was the first deployment for the ship, which traveled to both the Indo-Pacific and the Middle East. The $2 billion destroyer made a stop in Yokosuka, Japan, in early December before turning for home.
The ship is named after Lenah Sutcliffe Higbee, the first woman to be awarded the Navy Cross for her leadership in World War I.
