Donations solicited to assist San Diego police officer hit, injured by suspected drunken driver

The family of a San Diego police officer hit by a suspected drunken driver while on duty Saturday night in Pacific Beach is seeking help with expenses as the officer recovers from his injuries.

San Diego police said two officers were struck by a Honda Civic around 8:25 p.m. at the intersection of Thomas Avenue and Mission Boulevard. The driver was heading east in westbound lanes when the vehicle struck the two, police said. It was unclear what the officers were doing in the roadway.

One officer was uninjured, police said, but the other was taken to the hospital.

This week, Tiffany Cervencik launched a GoFundMe page on behalf of Officer Mike Wilder’s family. Cervencik, who said she is Wilder’s significant other, said the couple has two young sons, and the family relies on Wilder taking extra shifts and working overtime.

“This sudden accident has left him unable to work, and as the sole supporter of our household, we are now facing an uncertain future,” Cervencik said in the GoFundMe appeal. “With his recovery ahead, we are concerned about covering our everyday expenses and making sure our boys have what they need.

“The funds raised through this campaign will help us manage household costs and support our family while Mike takes the time he needs to heal and fully recover before returning to work.”

The man who was driving the Honda was arrested on suspicion of violating the terms of his DUI probation, a police spokesperson said.
