by Caleb Lunetta

A 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with a fatal crash that killed a maintenance worker in Chula Vista Monday afternoon, police said.

The crash occurred around 1:25 p.m. when a Toyota Prius traveling east on Bonita Road near Willow Street failed to negotiate a turn, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a parked vehicle, Chula Vista police Officer Julio Armenta said. The car then drove onto the sidewalk and hit a 46-year-old roadside worker.

The maintenance worker died before he could be taken to a hospital, Armenta said. His name will be released by the county Medical Examiner’s Office pending notification of his family.

The Prius’ driver stayed at the scene and spoke with investigators, Armenta said.

The alleged driver, Alexander Heydari, was then arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and vehicular manslaughter while impaired.

No other details were immediately available.
