Elementary school in Ramona evacuated during SWAT standoff at nearby home

by Karen Kucher

A SWAT standoff with a person holed up inside a Ramona home Wednesday prompted the evacuation of a nearby elementary school — with students being relocated to a Montessori school about a mile away, authorities said.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a post on X that Hanson Elementary School students could be picked up by their parents at the Ramona Community Montessori School on Ramona Street. The office posted information about the incident just after 1:35 p.m.

Hanson Elementary, which has an enrollment of around 530 students, is around a half mile from the home where the SWAT standoff is taking place, officials said.

Sheriff’s officials urged the public to avoid Royal Vista Drive, west of Ramona Street, while the incident was underway. Few details were immediately released.

“They evacuated the school just to be extra, extra cautious,” said Lt. Jessica Boegler.

Boegler said deputies initially responded to a house on Royal Vista Drive shortly before 9:20 a.m. after someone asked them to check on the welfare of a person in the home. After several hours, SWAT officers were deployed to the scene. Sheriff’s deputies were being assisted by Escondido police.

A sheriff’s crisis negotiation team was also sent.

It was not clear if the person inside the home was armed, if any threats had been made or if deputies had made contact with the person.

Sheriff’s officials said in a statement posted around 8 p.m. to X that the standoff was resolved.

No other details were immediately available.
