Farmers Insurance Open to return to La Jolla Jan. 29 to Feb. 1
Those who frequent La Jolla’s annual Farmers Insurance Open PGA golf tournament know each day of the competition has a different energy — and is customizable for each fan.
Opening day, for example, has its own sense of excitement and anticipation, with all players participating and wanting to prove their skills, said event executive officer Marty Gorsich.
The second day is considered “cut day,” when the first round of players are eliminated, Gorsich said. Thus, fans who follow certain players either can breathe a sigh of relief or groan in disappointment.
The third day is sometimes called “moving day” because players move up and down in the rankings, depending on their scores, setting the stage for the final day.
The fourth day is “champions day,” when the winner is decided.
“Each day has a different feel,” Gorsich said. “Each one has a vibe depending on how people want to spend their day. Some people like one particular day, some like all four days, and they all have their reasons. Folks have their ritualistic things they do. … It’s a mixed bag of … what they enjoy about the experience.”
The four days of the next tournament are Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 at Torrey Pines Golf Course. The event marks the return to a Thursday-to-Sunday schedule from the Wednesday-to-Saturday run in recent years.
Players for the tournament have not yet been announced.
“We have some new activations, but we know there are folks that come and do things the way they want to,” Gorsich said. “Sometimes they follow a group or a player or hang out somewhere and have a drink. But no matter what, it’s the only event that you can enjoy all day and still be home to pick up your kids from school or be there for dinner.”
Some of the offerings outside of golf include Tito’s Golf Club on the eighth hole of Torrey Pines South, which includes interactive activities and views of the course.
There also are the Dobel Tequila Club, where guests can interact with a golf simulator or have a specialty cocktail; Bushmills Irish Whiskey Bar, with elevated views of the 15th green; the new DecKorators Fan Deck and more.
“Some of these (areas) are more energetic and full of things to do; others provide a great place to relax and watch the game or overlook the Pacific Ocean,” Gorsich said. “People can be with friends, be social, watch some golf or walk around. There are ways to watch the game, but that is not the mandate. I’ve seen people come in groups and disperse pretty quickly. That’s the beauty of it.”
Unlike other sporting events, in which the enjoyment of the game is largely dependent on whether a favorite team wins or loses, “golf is more relaxed,” he said.
Daily grounds tickets start at $60 per day for Days 1 and 2 and $70 per day for the final two days. Children 15 and younger receive free grounds admission with a paid adult (one free children’s admission per adult), and discounted daily grounds tickets for senior citizens and military members begin at $50 per day Thursday and Friday.
All tickets to the Farmers Insurance Open are digital, and guests are encouraged to load their tickets to their smartphone’s mobile wallet to display as they enter the gates.
