Fleet Week San Diego cancels key event at Broadway Pier due to government shutdown

by Gary Robbins

Fleet Week San Diego suffered another big setback late Monday when a decision was made to cancel all events scheduled to be held at Broadway Pier from Nov. 5-9.

The Fleet Week Foundation said it had “been advised by the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard that as the result of the continued lapse in appropriations from the ongoing federal government shutdown, it will not be able to provide the Navy Ship, Coast Guard Cutter and Marine Corps equipment necessary to support the Fleet Week Public Outreach events scheduled for Broadway Pier.”

The canceled events include Student STEM Days, a community breakfast aboard the USS Midway Museum, and the Veterans & Military Boat Parade.

The news comes one week after the shutdown led the Navy to cancel plans to allow the public to visit Naval Base San Diego on Nov. 1 to tour warships.

Fleet Week said in a statement Monday that while disappointed by having to cancel the Broadway Pier events, “our staff has been able to proceed, reschedule or change the venue of the following events: Fleet Week Football Classic at Snapdragon Stadium on Nov. 1, Military Family Day on Nov. 9, and Enlisted Recognition Luncheon on Nov. 21.”
