Focus on political parties in coverage of nonpartisan boards not helpful
“Aguirre sworn in on board at festive ceremony: Addition brings back Democratic majority to county supervisors” {July 23): Enough with the constant references in your pages to the political parties of local elected officials. The Board of Supervisors, the City Council and the trustees of the San Diego Unified School District are all nonpartisan. Of course, as elected political officials and involved citizens, they may well be affiliated with a party which may endorse and support their election. But the whole beauty and focus of local government is that issues like quality schools or the disaster at the Tijuana River Estuary transcend and sometimes make meaningless party labels. We have plenty of partisan paralysis in Washington. Calling attention in every story to party labels of members of nonpartisan bodies isn’t particularly helpful.
