Golf tournament will benefit Ramona 10-year-old fighting cancer

by Regina Elling

A golf tournament benefit for Grant Carlson, a 10-year-old battling leukemia, is planned for Friday, Nov. 14.

The “Teeing Off Fore Grant” golf tournament begins at 11 a.m. at the San Vicente Golf Course, 24157 San Vicente Road. The benefit was put together by several close friends of the Carlson family.

Grant was diagnosed in July 2024 with T-Cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or T-All, a very aggressive blood cancer. He has faced several transfusions, infusions and hospitalizations since his diagnosis.

“Grant recently faced a setback when he developed a chemo-induced brain injury,” said his mother, Jessica Carlson. “He lost the ability to walk and from May until the end of August this year was hospitalized the entire time.”

Carlson said Grant has a wheelchair, but after working closely with the rehabilitation specialists, he is able to walk short distances.

But because of the injury, he had to pause his chemotherapy treatment. His situation is reevaluated every week, Carlson said.

Grant has another infection that requires him to remain isolated, his mother said. His family is continuing as much of his treatment as possible at home.

“It’s a constant roller coaster,” Carlson said.

“Despite having lots of doctors appointments and rehab visits, Grant keeps his smile and has a very positive attitude,” she said. “He tells me he is going to beat this.”

The youngster is facing another year and a half of his three-year treatment. Funds from the golf tournament will be used for adaptive resources for Grant, as well as his overall treatment and care.

Foursome Entries for the tournament, including 18 holes for four players, cart rental, lunch, dinner and player swag bags, are available for $600.

A number of different sponsorships are available. Hole sponsorships range from $250 to $1,750; Meal sponsorships include the “Pre-round Fuel” lunch sponsor at $2,000 to the “19th Hole” dinner sponsor at $3,500. The Premium “Orange Ribbon Champion” sponsor is $5,000 and above.

Donations of products, services or gift certificates for the golf goodie bags, raffle or silent auction are also needed and will be accepted until Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Carlson said the public is welcome to come to the event whether or not they participate in the tournament.

“We are going to have a raffle and silent auction, and we will be selling all of Grant’s merchandise,” she said. Most of the items feature the “His fight is our fight” slogan.
