Harland Brewery closes in One Paseo

by Karen Billing

The very last call for beers at One Paseo’s Harland tasting room was Sunday, Oct. 19.

Harland has closed its Carmel Valley location after six years as it looks to open a new restaurant in Del Sur Town Center in 4S Ranch by the end of the year, in the former Ponce’s space.

Since Harland’s founding in 2019 by Saint Archer Brewing Company alums, the blue-collar brewery with the “Labor of Beer” motto has grown in popularity with tasting rooms in Scripps Ranch, Bay Park and South Park’s brewpub and cafe.

“When we started Harland, we focused on a few core beers with very few specialty offerings,” said Anthony Levas, president of Ocotollo Holdings and one-third of the ownership team that includes Josh Landan and Jeff Hansson. “Over time we have greatly expanded our specialty program which has driven more excitement in our retail locations and in the general market. Using our five barrel pilot system we are able to release one or two new beers each week for our tap rooms and restaurant.”

Harland’s three core beers-the Japanese Lager, West Coast IPA and Hazy IPA-pair with specialties like their rotating New Zealand hopped IPA series, Sour Series and a yearly release of Ube Milkshake IPA. This year they also produced Crone Zone, a collaboration with Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth.

“One Paseo was the first Harland tasting room that opened, and the One Paseo center has been a great vehicle for us from a marketing and visibility standpoint,” Levas said. “We have loved being in the same center with so many fantastic retail operations. The team at Kilroy was also great to work with, especially through the pandemic. The decision was really driven by the success of our South Park location, which introduced our first food concept. With a full kitchen, beer and wine we are able to provide a better overall experience for our customers.”

“We will certainly miss all of the regulars that frequented One Paseo, as well as the friends that we have made in the center,” Levas said. “A huge thank you goes out to everyone who has supported us over the past six years in OP, and we hope that they choose to visit us in 4S Ranch when we open.”

Harland didn’t serve food at the One Paseo location, however, guests could bring in food from the neighboring restaurants. At the new 4S location, the lunch and dinner menu put together by Director of Culinary Operations Scott Cannon will feature everything from braised short rib, pork kimchi fried rice, seared salmon and their signature double smash burger. Weekend brunches will serve up chicken and waffles, seasonal frittatas, breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, and lighter fare. They will also have fresh baked cookies and a full kids menu.

“With so many options out there for great beer in San Diego, we have found that creating family- friendly options with great beer, food and wine is the way that our retail operations will keep our fans coming back,” Levas said. “Our South Park location is nestled in a great historic neighborhood, and we have been able to connect with the local community and families by creating a place where the whole family can enjoy our space… Curating a more well rounded experience for guests is working for us in South Park and we can’t wait to do it again in 4S Ranch.”
