Harmony Grove area not suitable for large housing project

by U T Readers

Re “County planning commission approves Harmony Grove housing project” (Sept. 1): County supervisors need to vote to reject the Harmony Grove proposal. This proposed housing project sits in the middle of a fire zone. Wildfires have occurred such as the Harmony Grove Fire of 1996 and the Cocos Fire of 2014 and are projected to occur again, according to fire officials.

Water storage for fires is still a problem here. There is one exit to this enclave and another is needed. Knowing this and more must be enough to end this project. Fires starting in the Harmony Grove area can and have easily spread very quickly to surrounding communities.

There is no adequate mitigation for wildfires in current fire zones for new home development. We need housing, but not at the cost of lives.
