Here’s how the Padres fared vs. the Cubs this season
The Padres and Cubs split the six games they played in 2025, with the home team taking two of three in both series in April. Both teams scored 25 runs across the season series.

- What happened: C Martín Maldonado’s third-inning homer accounted for the Padres’ lone run. Justin Turner’s pinch-hit single keyed a two-run fifth inning and RHP Ryan Pressly, released in August, worked through traffic in the ninth to earn the save.
April 5 at Wrigley Field
Cubs 7, Padres 1
- WP: LHP Matthew Boyd (6 IP, 0 ER, BB, 5 Ks). LP: RHP Nick Pivetta (3 IP, 3 ER, 3 BBs, 4 Ks).
- What happened: Pivetta struggled with command in his second start of the season in what proved to be his shortest of the year. Pivetta walked in a run in the second and gave up a solo homer to SS Dansby Swanson in the third. The Padres managed one extra-base hit (Luis Arraez) in the game.
April 6 at Wrigley Field
Padres 8, Cubs 7
- WP: RHP Jason Adam (1 IP, 0 ER, BB, K). LHP: RHP Ryan Pressly (1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, BB).
- What happened: A ninth-inning error led to the eventual game-winning run in a game that chewed up pitching. Cubs RHP Ben Brown allowed four runs in five innings. LHP Kyle Hart allowed five runs in two-thirds of an inning in the start before RHP Logan Gillaspie, fresh off a flight from El Paso, threw four innings of two-run ball. RHP Robert Suarez saved the win with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. OF Kyle Tucker homered for the Cubs. OF Jackson Merrill homered for the Padres and 1B Luis Arraez had four hits.

- What happened: The starting pitching — RHP Dylan Cease (5⅔ IP, 3 R), RHP Jameson Taillon (5⅓ IP, 2 ER) — was basically a wash, but the Padres bullpen outpaced the Cubs’. 1B Michael Busch homered off Cease. OF Fernando Tatis Jr. went deep twice, once off Taillon and once off RHP Eli Morgan, who also gave up a homer to 1B Luis Arraez.
