High School Football Roundup: Country Day is last La Jolla team standing in playoffs
And then there was one.
With the La Jolla Country Day Torreys advancing to the semifinals in their division, The Bishop’s School Knights ousted in the second round in theirs and La Jolla High School having been defeated the week before, Country Day is the sole La Jolla team still in the running for a title in the CIF San Diego Section high school varsity football playoffs.
The Torreys, the 10th seed in Division IV, went on the road Nov. 14 to defeat No. 2 El Capitan of Lakeside 22-7.
Country Day (6-6) now will travel to No. 3 Valley Center (5-6) at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, eyeing its third consecutive road playoff victory. The winner will advance to the division championship game Saturday, Nov. 29.
Against El Capitan, Torreys quarterback Jett Astephen threw touchdown passes of 34 and 48 yards to Hesh Hertz and a 55-yard TD to Quentin Cesaire. The defense did the rest, coming up with two turnovers in the fourth quarter to protect the lead.
The Torreys extended the Vaqueros’ end-of-season losing streak to five games.
In Division III the same night, the eighth-seeded Bishop’s Knights fell on the road to top seed Central Union of El Centro 35-17.
The Knights had a 17-7 lead in the second quarter but were unable to hold on and finished the season 8-4 overall.
