High School Football Roundup: La Jolla High claims easy homecoming victory over Christian

La Jolla’s three high school varsity football teams made a clean sweep of their games this weekend, all piling up 40 points or more while posting easy victories.

La Jolla High 41, Christian 24

Though festivities were minimal at La Jolla High School’s homecoming game Oct. 3, with students forgoing floats and the announcement of the homecoming court until the school dance, the football team gave plenty of reasons to celebrate.

In their matchup against Christian of El Cajon, the Vikings jumped to an early lead and cruised to victory to improve their season record to 4-2. The Patriots dropped to 1-5.

Halftime cheer performances, fireworks and a field-goal kicking contest kept the energy high.

The Vikings have another home game coming up against Lincoln of San Diego (5-1) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10. Home field has been good to the Vikings so far this season — they’re 3-0 and have averaged 44 points per game.

La Jolla Country Day 40, Escondido Charter 0

The Torreys kept up the momentum from their upset of The Bishop’s School a week earlier by routing Escondido Charter at Orange Glen High School in Escondido on Oct. 3.

Marvin Jones III had two rushing touchdowns and passed for a TD for Country Day, and Keenan Ward rushed for one touchdown and returned a blocked punt for another. The Torreys’ defense forced five turnovers against the Tigers (2-4).

Country Day (3-4) will get an extra week to prepare for its next game, a tough matchup at home vs. Coastal League rival Santa Fe Christian of Solana Beach (currently 6-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17.

Bishop’s 49, Classical Academy 0

A week after their season-opening four-game winning streak was snapped by La Jolla Country Day, the Knights got back in the win column by trouncing Classical Academy of Escondido (2-5) in a home game at La Jolla High School on Oct. 4.

Bishop’s (5-1) next will take on Don Lugo of Chino (1-5) on the road at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9.
