High School Football Roundup: Point Loma routs La Jolla; Country Day upsets Bishop’s
This week in local high school varsity football presented a good example of the adage “That’s why they play the games.”
Both matchups involving La Jolla’s three teams yielded surprising results — one in its one-sidedness and the other in the victor.
Point Loma 37, La Jolla High 7
The Vikings carried a three-game winning streak into their Eastern League showdown at undefeated Point Loma on Sept. 26 but were never really in the game as the Pointers came away with a big victory.
The origin of “The Battle for the Shoe” between Point Loma and La Jolla dates back 99 years. In that time, the two teams have shared the field some 70 times since 1926. In recent seasons, the rivalry had been a dead heat, with each school claiming two victories in the previous four meetings.
This time, however, Point Loma intercepted four Vikings passes, returning two for touchdowns, in a dominant defensive performance.
The Vikings fell to 3-2 on the season as the Pointers improved to 5-0.
Next up for La Jolla is a home league game vs. Christian of El Cajon (1-4) at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3.
La Jolla Country Day 28, Bishop’s 26
With the Bishop’s Knights going into their Sept. 26 Coastal League matchup against crosstown rival La Jolla Country Day unbeaten at 4-0 and the Torreys on a four-game losing streak, a Country Day victory seemed unlikely.
But the Torreys stunned the Knights in a thriller on the La Jolla High School field, opening a 28-13 lead after three quarters and holding on for the win, first stopping a potential game-tying two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter and then intercepting a pass at their own 5-yard line in the final minute.
Country Day (2-4) next travels to Escondido to take on Escondido Charter (2-3) at Orange Glen High School at 7 p.m. Oct. 3.
Next for Bishop’s (4-1) is a home game vs. Classical Academy of Escondido (2-4) at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at La Jolla High.
