How does it make sense to require IDs for many purposes but not voting?
Re “DeMaio launches voter ID campaign” (July 17): Regarding the claim that voter fraud is rare, I can assure you it’s more frequent than people think. I’ve witnessed it, and, unless the person committing fraud admits to it, there is little chance it will come to light. Even if fraud was rare that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t put measures in place to prohibit it. Many crimes (murder, rape, etc.) are rare, but that doesn’t mean we should allow them.
The argument that requiring an ID is too difficult doesn’t hold up either – we show ID every day for many tasks, yet we haven’t imposed laws prohibiting the showing of ID. One wonders about the motives of those who want to keep the status quo in place. Putting some commonsense voting protections in place would go a long way toward restoring people’s confidence in elections and our democracy.
