Jail sentence for man convicted of lewd acts at UC San Diego and SDSU
A 33-year-old man convicted of committing lewd acts in front of women on college campuses last year has been sentenced to three years in jail in connection with several misdemeanor sex-related offenses, the San Diego City Attorney’s Office said.
At trial in October, a San Diego Superior Court jury convicted Adrian Haywood of three counts of indecent exposure, two counts of lewd conduct and a count of sexual battery.
Each charge carries a potential sentence of up to six months in jail. When Haywood was sentenced Wednesday, the judge ordered that he serve time for each of the six charges consecutively, which amounted to a three-year sentence. The defendant was also ordered to register as a sex offender.
The City Attorney’s office said Haywood had “exposed himself or engaged in sexually explicit behavior in front of female students on university campuses, as well as a workplace incident involving a female colleague.” One of the women posted video of the encounter online.
The complaint alleged the six incidents happened between March 2024 and September 2024, with three happening in that last month. The City Attorney’s Office said two of the incidents occurred at UC San Diego, and three occurred at San Diego State University. Most of the woman quickly came forward to make a report.
“We are pleased with the outcome of this case and the sentence ordered by the judge,” said Chief Deputy City Attorney Angela Law, who heads the Domestic Violence and Sex Crimes Unit. “It sends a clear message that we take public safety very seriously.”
The case was prosecuted by Deputy City Attorney Benjamin Bertran-Harris. The name of Haywood’s defense attorney was not immediately available.
Aside from this case, Haywood also has Mental Health Diversion case pending in East County arising from a separate incident of alleged indecent exposure, according to the City Attorney’s Office.
Later next week, the City Attorney’s Office is slated to arraign a different suspect in a different case regarding a series of sexual batteries in multiple neighborhoods earlier this year.
“These cases underscore my office’s commitment to prosecuting conduct that threatens the safety and dignity of women and of our entire communities,” said City Attorney Heather Ferbert. “We will continue to use every tool available to address harassing and abusive behavior, support victims and survivors, and bring offenders to justice.”
