John Maffei’s picks: La Costa Canyon-Mount Miguel game is one to watch in Week 2

The Union-Tribune’s John Maffei picks 10 of Friday’s biggest high school football games. All games at 7 p.m., unless noted:

San Pasqual (1-0) at Torrey Pines (1-0)

When: 7:15 p.m.

Preview: Robert Renteria threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns for San Pasqual in a 42-6 win over Classical Academy last week. He also rushed for 72 yards. Marcus Rocha had four catches for 95 yards and two TDs, while Jared Brecht caught three passes for 65 yards. The Eagles had 453 yards of total offense. … Blake Miller threw for 166 yards and a pair of TDs for Torrey Pines in a 43-19 win over La Jolla. Dom Rocha rushed 15 times for 118 yards and three TDs. The teams haven’t played each other since 2019.

Prediction: Torrey Pines 31, San Pasqual 24

West Hills (0-1) at University City (1-0)

Preview: West Hills used Evin Dill and Roman Franssens at quarterback in last week’s 44-19 loss to Holtville. The offense had 236 yards while the defense gave up 392 yards — 349 of them on the ground. … University City beat Temecula Rancho Christian 55-20, with Quentyn DeMara throwing for 274 yards and Deshaun Hille rushing for 155. The Centurions had 545 yards of total offense.

Prediction: University City 42, West Hills 21

Mira Mesa (1-0) at Valhalla (1-0)

Preview: Mira Mesa had just 143 yards of total offense, but edged El Capitan 11-0 last week. … Valhalla’s Jackson Newman threw for 70 yards and rushed for 118 in a 51-27 win over San Jacinto Valley. Amed Husaini rushed for three touchdowns.

Prediction: Mira Mesa 20, Valhalla 14

Oceanside (0-1) at No. 6 Carlsbad (1-0)

Preview: Oceanside’s Anthony Barquinero threw for 299 yards, but the Pirates fell to Granite Hills 45-27 last week. The Oceanside defense gave up 652 yards. … Carlsbad’s Eli MacNeal threw just 10 times but put up 249 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-0 win over Lakewood. Travis Jeffery caught six passes for 173 yards and Ethan Meyerhoff caught four passes for 85 yards.

Prediction: Carlsbad 31, Oceanside 24

Santana (1-0) at Crawford (0-1)

Preview: Ethan Miller threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 30-0 win over Canyon Hills. Santana’s last opening-week shutout was 54-0 against Southwest-San Diego in 2015. … Crawford put up just 207 yards of total offense in a 36-13 loss to Monte Vista last week. Khalid Ali rushed 16 times for 129 yards.

Prediction: Santana 28, Crawford 14

Montgomery (0-1) at El Capitan (0-1)

Prediction: Montgomery was outgained 434 yards to 110 in last week’s 22-0 loss to San Diego. … El Capitan had just 143 yards of total offense in an 11-0 loss to Mira Mesa in a game that was 3-0 after three quarters.

Prediction: El Capitan 17, Montgomery 13

La Jolla Country Day (1-0) at Mt. Carmel (1-0)

Preview: Keenan Ward ran 11 times for 169 yards and four touchdowns as LJCD beat Chula Vista 30-21 last week. … Mt. Carmel rolled up 457 yards total offense in a 43-21 win over Westview; Trevor Taumoepeau led the way with 320 passing yards and four touchdowns. Atticus Enriquez had seven catches for 125 yards and two TDs, while Connor Gibbons had six catches for 125 yards and two scores.

Prediction: Mt. Carmel 35, La Jolla Country Day 28

Point Loma (1-0) at Otay Ranch (1-0) 

Preview: Point Loma rolled up 469 yards of total offense, with Ryder Watson throwing for 202 yards and Henry Heuser 122 in a 42-24 win over Del Norte. Romeo Carter had seven catches for 236 yards and three touchdowns…. AJ Lopez threw for three TDs and ran for another as Otay Ranch beat Rancho Buena Vista 32-6.

Prediction: Point Loma 32, Otay Ranch 27

No. 5 La Costa Canyon (1-0) at No. 7 Mount Miguel (1-0)

Preview: LCC’s stars shined last week in a 43-14 win over St. Augustine: Quinn Roth threw for 103 yards, Coby Herman rushed for two touchdowns and returned a punt for a score and Ford Mitchell had 200 yards in returns, including 94 on a kickoff. The defense had three sacks. LCC is ranked No. 24 in the state by MaxPreps.com and No. 160 in the nation. … Mount Miguel scored late to take the lead, then stopped San Marcos’ 2-point PAT try with 44 seconds to play for a 28-27 win.

Prediction: La Costa Canyon 28, Mount Miguel 21
