La Jolla crime and public safety news: ‘Daylighting’ tickets; police blotter for Sept. 25 to Oct. 2
La Jolla remains a hot spot for ‘daylighting’ tickets
Vista del Mar Avenue in La Jolla is the second-most-ticketed street in San Diego in the city’s enforcement of the “daylighting” law that prohibits street parking within 20 feet of an intersection or a crosswalk in an effort to improve visibility and pedestrian and bicycle safety.
From March 1 to Sept. 18, the city issued more than 13,000 such citations overall, 300 of them on Vista del Mar, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune analysis. That trailed Polk Avenue in North Park and City Heights, which had more than 800.
However, Vista del Mar had the most-ticketed intersections, near an entrance to Windansea Beach: 7000 Vista del Mar had 75 citations and 6600 Vista del Mar had 69.
According to city data, the tickets were worth a total of $1.4 million in fines. The city raised the fine from $77.50 to $117.50 the month after implementation began.
In early September, when a report by CBS-TV/8 said Vista del Mar Avenue was the location of the most daylighting tickets in the city, San Diego Police Department spokesman Travis Easter told the La Jolla Light that officers had noticed violations in that area during regular patrols and continued to enforce there, resulting in more tickets. However, he said the neighborhood was not being specifically targeted. — The San Diego Union-Tribune and La Jolla Light
