La Jolla crime and public safety news: Pedestrian killed, Labor Day safety report, blotter
Pedestrian hit and killed on La Jolla Village Drive
A 31-year-old woman was fatally injured when hit by a car in the 4300 block of La Jolla Village Drive near Westfield UTC mall, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The pedestrian was walking south across La Jolla Village Drive from the center median at about 9:15 p.m. Sept. 21 and was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 31-year-old man heading east, police said.
The pedestrian was declared dead at a hospital. Alcohol is not considered a factor in the crash, police said.
Police report ‘successful’ Labor Day at La Jolla beaches
Following a series of loud parties during recent holiday weekends, Labor Day in La Jolla was relatively calm, according to local law enforcement.
Representatives of the San Diego Police and Fire-Rescue departments shared reports from the Labor Day holiday at local beaches during the September La Jolla Town Council meeting.
“Labor Day was pretty successful for us; we didn’t have any major incidents,” said police Lt. Bryan Brecht.
Officers worked 12-hour shifts and additional teams were brought on for patrol all three days of the weekend, he said. “Every day, we had about 100 to 120 officers working the field.”
Officers wrote nearly 500 citations involving illegal activity on the beach, mostly alcohol-related, Brecht said.
With the shift from summer to fall, Brecht said members of the day beach team will be redistributed to other duties and may be less present or visible.
Lifeguard John Mahar said his division “did a ton of rescues” over the Labor Day weekend, but he did not have specifics on hand.
