Local Colleges Report: UCSD, San Diego State soccer teams play to tie at Snapdragon Stadium
The match between San Diego State and USD men wasn’t the only college soccer game played at Snapdragon Stadium during the past week.
The SDSU women (1-2-1) played UC San Diego (1-1-2) to a scoreless tie Saturday night before a San Diego State program-record crowd of 2,593. Goalies Kailey Carlen (SDSU) and Charlotte Wilfert (UCSD) combined to make eight saves.
Meanwhile, the University of San Diego women’s soccer team defeated Cal State Northridge 3-1 at home Sunday night to remain unbeaten (1-0-3) after four games for the first time in 15 seasons. Sophomore defender Ella Callanan scored a goal and had an assist for the Toreros.

• The ninth-ranked Point Loma Nazarene University women’s soccer team will open its 2025 season Saturday at home against Cal State San Marcos.
• Cuyamaca College’s defending California Community College state champion men’s soccer team scored a 3-1 win at Saddleback last Friday to open the season with a 1-0-1 record. Southwestern College is 1-1 after two matches, while the Jaguars women are off to a 2-0-1 start.
Women’s volleyball
USD defeated Hawaii in straight sets to win the Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu. Toreros outside hitter Nemo Beach was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while setter Kylie Munday and blocker Kali Engeman were also all-tournament picks.
Beach and Munday won WCC Player of the Week honors at their respective positions, while BayLea Sparks was named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week. Beach had 28 kills in the tourney opener as USD defeated Utah State 3-2. USD then defeated Marquette 3-2. The Toreros (3-0) were picked to finish first in the West Coast Conference.
• UCSD sophomore Molly McCluskey was named the Big West Offensive Player of the Week. The Tritons are 1-2 after suffering a four-set loss to Northwestern on Sunday. McCluskey posted a career-high 29 kills, two aces and eight digs against the Wildcats. UCSD opened with a win over Eastern Washington before losing New Mexico State and Northwestern.
• SDSU freshman libero Zara Stewart was named to the All-California Tournament team as the Aztecs split their first two matches of the season, losing to Cal before beating San Francisco. Stewart had 27 digs, 15 assists, three aces and one kill in her collegiate debut against the Golden Bears.
Cross country
UC San Diego finished second to Cal Baptist in both the men’s and women’s divisions of the Aztec Coastal Classic cross country race last Friday on a course along Mission Valley River Park south of Snapdragon Stadium. USD placed third in the men’s race. Host San Diego State was third in the women’s race, followed by USD.
Senior Charlie Frank led UCSD’s men with a time of 22 minutes, 17.7 seconds for the seven-kilometer race. He finished eighth, while freshman Ryan Stanley (22:22.9) was 10th.
UCSD senior Sylvana Northrop (17:41.5) finished second in the women’s 5-kilometer women’s race. Tritons sophomore Dasha LaFaivre (18:09.00) was sixth and San Diego State senior Vanessa Cabello (18:24.8) was ninth.
Men’s golf
San Diego State is ranked 25th in the nation in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I coaches poll.
