by Bill Center

Almost 8% percent of the students at Point Loma Nazarene University are involved in intercollegiate athletics.

And many of them were busy last weekend.

The Sea Lions’ women’s volleyball team won the NCAA Division II West Regional and is headed to this week’s championships in South Dakota. The men’s soccer team lost in overtime in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.

And PLNU’s men’s and women’s basketball teams opened PacWest Conference play with wins on the road.

The Sea Lions’ men’s team, which is 7-1 overall and ranked 12th in the nation, defeated Jessup 89-87 in overtime on Thursday, then scored an 85-63 win at Fresno Pacific Saturday. The 6-2 women’s team, which has won six straight since losing 62-50 to Cal State San Marcos, defeated the same two teams.

The Sea Lions were led by guards Jaden Matingou (St. Augustine High School) and Tyce Paulsen and forwards Andrew Hommes and Andrew Nagy.

Paulsen had 35 points over the two games on 13-for-20 shooting, including going 9-for-14 from 3-point range. Matingou had 27 points and 11 assists. Hommes had 26 points and 16 rebounds over the two wins, while Nagy had 24 points and 16 rebounds.

The PLNU women out-scored Jessup 68-39 over the last three quarters in an 81-60 win, then defeated Fresno Pacific 67-56. Like the men’s team, the women were paced by four players.
