Man arrested in L.A. after woman found dead in City Heights hotel room

by Teri Figueroa

A little more than three weeks after a 22-year-old woman was found dead in a City Heights hotel room, a suspect in her death has been arrested, San Diego police said Friday.

Police identified the woman as Amy Carreon and the suspect as Demaurya Wiggers, 21. Both lived in San Diego.

According to police homicide Lt. Chris Tivanian, officers were called to the La Cresta Hotel just before 10 p.m. Oct. 20 regarding a woman in one of the rooms who appeared to be deceased.

Officers responded to the hotel, on El Cajon Boulevard near 50th Street, and found the woman, now identified as Carreon, unresponsive and suffering from trauma to her upper body, Tivanian said. She was pronounced dead, and homicide detectives were called to the scene.

Tivanian said that once detectives identified Wiggers as the suspect, they learned he was in Los Angeles. Detectives notified the Los Angeles Police Department, who found and arrested Wiggers in public Thursday.

San Diego police took custody of him and booked him into San Diego County jail on suspicion of murder. Online jail records indicate Wiggers is being held without bail and is slated to be arraigned Monday in San Diego Superior Court.

Police did not disclose any further details about the case.
