Man stabbed to death in Gaslamp Quarter hotel identified

by Caleb Lunetta

A 38-year-old man killed in a fatal Gaslamp Quarter stabbing earlier this week was identified Friday by San Diego homicide investigators.

Daniel Stanley was allegedly stabbed to death by 44-year-old Rene Lunar on the second floor of the Golden West Hotel on Fourth Avenue near G Street around 7 p.m. Wednesday, Lt. Chris Tivanian said.

Officers arrived with paramedics and Stanley was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Lunar was arrested on suspicion of murder and held without bail, according to online arrest logs.

Police said they believe Stanley was stabbed after he and Lunar got into an argument that escalated into a fight.

The assailant ran from the hotel immediately after the stabbing. A short time later, Lunar called 911 to say he was turning himself in, Tivanian said.
