Miller brothers each throw TD pass in Torrey Pines win over San Pasqual

by John Maffei

DEL MAR – The play call — Fly Eagle Fly — came in, and Torrey Pines High School receiver Logan Miller was excited.

Not because he was the target, but because he was the passer.

Late in the third quarter with the ball at the San Pasqual 19, Miller took the handoff from quarterback Blake Miller — his brother — swept right and found Camden Nishnick wide open in the end zone.

It was the Falcons’ final score in a 30-13 nonleague win over San Pasqual.

“I was pretty excited when the call came in,” Logan Miller said. “Blake and I have always had that brother thing, that receiver-quarterback connection, but I guess I took one of his touchdowns away from him.”

Blake, who completed 11 of 18 passes for 158 yards and a 6-yard TD to Nishnick, was perfectly OK with it.

“We scored on the play, we won the game, so it was pretty cool,” Blake Miller said. “Really, it’s kind of unique for brothers to throw touchdown passes in the same game.

“We practice that play about twice a day, so it wasn’t a surprise when it came in.

“Honestly, we were pretty fired up to hear the call.”

Blake and Logan Miller are triplets.

A third brother, Caiden, played football until deciding to concentrate on rugby.

“He was with us for a while, but rugby is his deal,” said Blake. “And he’s good at it.”

Nishnick had just two catches on the night, both going for touchdowns for Torrey Pines (2-0).

Logan Bonneau had six catches for 92 yards. Logan Miller had a pair of catches for 27 yards.

Sonny Villegas led all rushers with 14 carries for 56 yards.

San Pasqual was held to 49 yards rushing, losing 11 yards on a bad snap. And the Eagles (1-1) threw for just 92 yards.

Dominic Rocha returned the opening kickoff 86 yards, but Torrey Pines had to settle for a 27-yard Clark Drcar field goal.

After a San Pasqual punt, Torrey Pines took 10 plays to go 43 yards, scoring on a 5-yard run by Sonny Villegas.

The Falcons capitalized on a Chase Oleksy interception and pushed the score to 16-0 when Rocha capped a 60-yard drive with a 17-yard TD run.

San Pasqual got back in the game, driving 57 yards on 10 plays with Robert Renteria hitting Jared Brecht with a 9-yard scoring pass.

A pair of big plays and a pair of San Pasqual penalties set up a Torrey Pines score just before the half.

Blake Miller hit Logan Bonneau with a 34-yard pass, then he scrambled for 28 yards to the San Pasqual 24. The Eagles were then hit with a pair of penalties for 18 yards, moving the ball to the 6.

On the next play, Blake Miller found tight end Nishnick in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Falcons a 23-7 lead at the break.

Torrey Pines scored first in the second half on the Logan Miller TD pass.

Reece Goldberger had an interception for the Falcons to blunt a San Pasqual drive.

“Workman-like effort tonight,” said Torrey Pines coach Scott Ashby. “Not flashy, but we got the job done against a very good San Pasqual team.”
