Mount Miguel student suing school district over sexual assault on campus
A teenager who was sexually assaulted in a Mount Miguel High School bathroom last year by a fellow student — who is now serving a lengthy prison sentence — is suing the school district.
The suit, filed Thursday in San Diego Superior Court, alleges negligence and negligent supervision of minors by Grossmont Union High School District.
The district said declined comment Friday, noting that it does not comment on pending litigation.
The suit also names Reyvon English, who was an 18-year-old student at the Spring Valley school at the time. He pleaded guilty to three felony sex crimes earlier this year, and in May was sentenced to 24 years in state prison.
The plaintiff is referred to as Jane Doe in the suit because she was 15 years old at the time of the attack and is a victim of sexual assault.
The suit states the girl “has suffered tremendously because of the sexual assault.”
“It’s had a tremendous impact on her,” attorney Neil Gehlawat, who is representing the teen, said Friday. He said the girl has not communicated verbally with her family in more than a year, instead writing everything down, and has not slept in her room since the assault.
“It’s been really devastating,” Gehlawat said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the girl was on campus for an after-school program when she went into the girls restroom and was assaulted. The lawsuit alleges the assailant had followed the girl into the bathroom and forced her into a stall.
The Sheriff’s Office said the girl contacted campus officials who notified law enforcement. According to the lawsuit, together they notified the girl’s mother, who was in the school parking lot waiting to pick up her daughter.
English turned himself in about a week later.
