Nick Canepa: Commander in chief wants Washington to revert to racist nickname
Sez me …
There is a game afoot — commanded by our president, no less — for the Washington Commanders to return to their old nickname. That would be the Redskins (I hate to say this name but I have no choice but to print it for those under 21), which the franchise went by for 83 years.
It went away in 2020, without a tremendous amount of pressure to do so.
I don’t know how many Commanders remain in D.C., and I really dislike the NFL team’s choice of a replacement name. It should be Liars, Prevaricators, Brown Nosers, Cowards, Buck Passers. Much more fitting.
But El Presidente has made a threat. Either the Commanders return to Redskins, or he may not allow our taxpayers to help with the cost of the new D.C. stadium.
(I never knew the Feds could subsidize stadiums, did you, beloved San Diego Ham & Eggers?)
He also would like the Cleveland Guardians of MLB to bring back the Indians, and although he’s right, he doesn’t seem to be as adamant about that one.
I keep hearing many Native Americans favor Redskins. Haven’t they been through enough? Redskins is racist. The team’s founder and first owner, George Preston Marshall, put the name on his team. And he was a devout bigot.
Washington was the last team to sign a Black player (1962) and that only happened because Marshall was under pressure by the feds, who threatened to take away their playing rights in D.C. Stadium.
Sound familiar? The NFL at least pretends it doesn’t like the name.
I don’t believe Indians is racist any more than the Fighting Irish. But Stanford dropped Indians for Cardinal in 1972. Marquette was the Warriors when somebody told the bosses that it had something to do exclusively with Indians. In 1994, the school switched its nickname to the Golden Eagles.
Golden State hasn’t changed.
Names such as Indians, Braves, Utes, Aztecs, Illini, Seminoles, Chiefs — I could go on — are, standing alone, hardly racist. Really. Find me a real Aztec who objects to that nickname. A Brave? We are home of the Brave. It’s in the song.
Now, some of the war chants? The tomahawk chop? Racist.
There already was talk of Washington’s new owners changing the nickname back to its old racist moniker. The “credit,” if you want to call it that, won’t go to the team.
Redskins is racist. And George Preston Marshall is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
