No, Dems don’t ‘fight for what’s right’ in California redistricting

by U T Readers

Re “I support redistricting because Democrats must fight for what’s right” (Aug. 24): California’s current U.S. House delegation consists of 52 representatives, of which 43 are Democrats and just nine are Republicans. This means that while Donald Trump received 38% of the California vote in the 2024 election, Republicans have just 17% of California’s House seats. If the seats were apportioned by vote, instead of by gerrymandered districts, the California delegation would be 32 Democrats and 20 Republicans.

Now Gov. Gavin Newsom wants to make sure that California’s representation is even more lopsided and reduce the number of House Republicans from the state to just four or five! He probably envies Connecticut or Massachusetts, where Trump received 42% and 36% of the 2024 vote, respectively, yet neither state has even one Republican in its delegation to the U.S. House.

So which party is the bigger culprit in gerrymandering?
