Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. wins second Gold Glove
Fernando Tatis Jr. is now a two-time Gold Glove winner. He could also win a second Platinum Glove.
The Padres’ 26-year-old star beat out the Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll and the Brewers’ Sal Frelick for the top defensive honor for NL right fielders. Tatis won his first Gold Glove in his first full year as a right fielder in 2023, when he also earned the fan vote for the NL’s Platinum Glove for the league’s overall best defender.
This year’s Platinum Glove Awards, selected via a fan vote at rawlings.com, will be announced Friday and Tatis could win another as his 16.3 SABR Defensive Index score, a factor in his Gold Glove award, ranked second among all fielders, behind only Giants catcher Patrick Bailey (17.4).
Tatis led all defenders in 2023 with 27 total runs saved, according to Sports Info Solutions. This year, his 15 defensive runs saved were well behind the Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement and the Guardians’ Steve Kwan (22), but he was tied for second with all right fielders and ahead of Frelick (nine) and Carroll (eight).
Tatis also robbed at least four home runs this season.
Defense is also a component of WAR and Tatis ranking 10th in the majors with 6.1 — his second six-win season — had a great deal to do with his defense.
