Padres’ Jose Iglesias, Xander Bogaerts disciplined for umpire confrontation

Both Jose Iglesias and Xander Bogaerts are facing disciplinary action for their conduct toward umpires following last week’s season-ending loss to the Cubs in the National League Wild Card Series.

Iglesias was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount, while Bogaerts received an undisclosed fine.

Pending an appeal, Iglesias — who will be a free agent after the end of the World Series — will serve his suspension on the first day he is on a roster in 2026.

Home plate umpire D.J. Reyburn called Bogaerts out on a 3-2 fastball in the ninth inning of the Padres’ 3-1 Game 3 loss to the Cubs. MLB’s Gameday app showed the pitch crossed the plate well below the designated strike zone. Jackson Merrill had homered to start the inning, cutting the Cubs’ lead to two. After Bogaerts’ strikeout, Ryan O’Hearn and Bryce Johnson were hit by pitches. Jake Cronenworth then grounded out and Freddy Fermin flew out, ending the game with the tying run on second.

Bogaerts was asked about the call following the game — and before video of the confrontation began to circulate.

“Talk about it now; what do you want me to do?” Bogaerts said. “It’s a ball. Messed up the whole game, you know? I mean, (you) can’t go back in time and talking about it now won’t change anything.”

Video circulated on social media showing Iglesias approaching the umpires with what appeared to be pointed words as they descended into Wrigley Field’s visiting dugout and into the tunnel. Bogaerts had been hanging over the railing but appeared to animate when one of the umpires responded to Iglesias.

Among the shouting that ensued was someone yelling, “It’s bull(expletive); open your (bleeping) eyes.”

Security ultimately stepped between the Padres in the dugout and the umpires.

Before the start of the postseason, MLB announced that hitters, catchers and pitchers will have the right to challenge pitches they disagree with via an automated ball-strike system (ABS) beginning in 2026. A version of the system has been experimented with in recent years in the minors and was used as a preview this year in spring training.

Bogaerts alluded to the rules change following the Game 3 loss.

“So (the call) was bad, and thank God for ABS next year,” he said, “because this is terrible.”
