Padres minors: Good first days at Double-A for Eric Yost, Garrett Hawkins; Marcos Castañon homers twice

Eric Yost got off to a good start for Double-A San Antonio.

The 22-year-old right-hander threw 6⅓ strong innings, Marcos Castañon homered twice and the Missions beat host Frisco 4-2 on Saturday night.

Yost (1-0, 1.42 ERA) struck out five and allowed one run on two hits and two walks in the start.

Yost was promoted this week after the trade deadline after going 4-7 with a 2.89 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 33 walks in 87⅓ innings at high Single-A Fort Wayne.

Right-hander Garrett Hawkins was also promoted this weekend and struck out three over two scoreless innings for his first save in his first Double-A game. He struck out 60 batters in 44 innings (1.43 ERA) to start the year in Fort Wayne’s bullpen.

Castañon’s two home runs pushed his season total to 10. He drove in all four runs and also singled in a three-hit game that lifted his OPS to .749.

San Antonio is 53-48.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (57-49)

Chihuahuas 5, Round Rock 2: 2B Nate Mondou (.792 OPS) went 1-for-4 with his second homer and three RBIs. DH Luis Campusano (.976 OPS) went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two RBIs, two walks and a run scored. RHP Alek Jacob (5.28 ERA) struck out three over two scoreless innings and RHP Sean Reynolds (4.41 ERA) saved his second game with a strikeout in a scoreless ninth.

 

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (48-52)

Great Lakes 18, TinCaps 3: RHP Will Varmette (1-2, 8.44 ERA) allowed four runs in 3⅔ innings in the loss. All told, TinCaps pitchers allowed 19 hits and nine walks. 2B Zach Evans (1.000 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits. RF Braedon Karpathios (.780 OPS) went 3-for-4 with a run scored.

 

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (47-54)

Inland Empire 14, Storm 7: RHP Bryan Balzer (1-5, 8.15 ERA) allowed four runs in two innings in the loss. RHP Kannon Kemp (7.75 ERA) allowed seven runs in two innings. LF Alex McCoy (.752 OPS) went 2-for-3 with his third homer, two walks and two runs scored. 3B Kerrington Cross (1.238 OPS) went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. RF Kavares Tears (.704 OPS) and C Yoiber Ocopio (1.000 OPS) both had doubles.

 

ROOKIE DSL BROWN (18-25)

Padres 2, Dodgers 1 (7): RHP Albert Pérez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) struck out two over two scoreless innings in relief for the win. RHP Josias Figueroa (3.31 ERA) allowed an unearned run in four innings in the start. RHP Jeuris Guzman (1.88 ERA) saved his second game with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. 1B Abraham Bastidas (.851 OPS) went 2-for-3.

 

ROOKIE DSL GOLD (28-15)

Padres 7, Orioles 0 (7): LHP Jeronimo Palmeros (1-1, 3.52 ERA) struck out four over five scoreless innings in the start. CF Moises Valdez (.835 OPS) went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, a walk and a run scored. 3B Eduarlin Tejeda (.799 OPS) went 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a walk.
