Padres minors: Kash Mayfield gets first win, Luis Campusano homers twice

by Jeff Sanders

Kash Mayfield took a step forward Wednesday.

The 20-year-old left-hander won his first game as a professional, striking out seven over five shutout innings to lead low Single-A Lake Elsinore to a 7-0 win over visiting San Jose.

Mayfield (1-4) scattered one hit and three walks while throwing 43 of his 73 strikes. The five innings tied a career high.

The Padres drafted Mayfield in the first round last year. He has struck out 72, walked 26 and held hitters to a .197 batting average through the first 49⅓ innings of his career.

Following last month’s trade deadline, Mayfield is ranked No. 4 in the system as ranked by MLB.com, behind catcher Ethan Salas, left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft and right-hander Humberto Cruz.

Catcher Carlos Rodriguez (.866 OPS) drove in three runs on two hits, including a double.

Designated hitter Alex McCoy (.930 OPS) went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored.

Shortstop Jose Quintana (.619 OPS) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and center fielder Ryan Wideman (.453 OPS) went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Lake Elsinore is 50-60.
